It all begins with an idea and honestly, I believe it.
Where do I start? I started my journey as a doula back in 2018 not knowing where to start. I gave up hope for a while due to money, the timing wasn’t right, and just did not believe I could do it. While finishing up my undergrad at Wright State University I had an idea. That idea pushed me to do my research, to look into becoming a doula. From there I began planning out my idea, which would soon blossom into reality.
By the end of 2019, I knew what I had to do and how I wanted to do it. Then the feeling of after-college blues started to sink in. The feeling of what now and maybe I should do what everybody else is doing. I let myself believe that and went on the path of trying to find the right corporate job for me. After 2020 hit and it was downhill. A pandemic…..the world seemed to stop and it did for a while. What seemed like time was standing still for me. I truly understood what it meant when people say time waits for nobody.
Through it all, I kept thinking I need to go do it, what’s really stopping me now? My answer at that point was nothing is stopping you. By 2021 I was immersed in my doula journey and at the end of the year, I was trained and ready to go. Ready to do and go to places I thought couldn’t be possible. The thought of starting my journey as a doula to help people through childbirth and beyond was a scary idea once upon a time. Now it’s my reality all from an idea I had years ago of what I wanted to do as a career.
That leads me back to the question of where do I start? Be clear, be confident, and don’t overthink it.
We all have ideas and sometimes life can come and shake things up but just know those ideas can lead you to places. Personally, I love to think of myself as my #1 FAN and I am, and sometimes you need that extra support and a community. To meet amazing doulas along the way that have encouraged me to keep going I’m beyond grateful. To find support and a community is such a plus and something that’s needed not only through childbirth but throughout life.
